The Gujarat high court has installed two user-friendly 'information kiosks' on the court premises where concerned members of the public can know the status of their cases. The kiosks were inaugurated on Monday by chief justice of Gujarat, SJ Mukhopadhya.

User-friendly touch-screen computers installed at the two kiosks would help lawyers, members of the high court staff and litigants know the status of pending cases immediately.

The kiosks are similar to those installed at railway stations to provide passenger information about the status of their tickets, including whether they had been confirmed or were still wait-listed.

The computers installed in the high court kiosks display information in the same format as the Gujarat high court website. A person has to enter the case number, the case type and the year of filing to know the latest status about a particular case.

"This is a very useful facility as it will give common people, as well as lawyers, easy access to information about cases, quickly and promptly," said Yatin Oza, president of the Gujarat high court advocates' association (GHCAA).

"Earlier, people had to pay Rs5 to know these. Now it will be provided free of cost," he added. Another lawyer, Mrugesh J. Patel, said that the operating system of the kiosk was very easy to use.

"Earlier, we could get information about cases only by going to the information counter and giving case details in writing," Patel said. "It used to take a lot more time then than it does now. We can now ourselves access our case profiles in no time."

One kiosk has been set up at the main gate of the high court building and the other in a block situated in the centre of the building which is visited by a large number of visitors.

Official sources said the kiosks had been set up to give common people easy access to case details. A special software provided by the high court had been installed in the touch-screen computers, the sources said.
