Gujarat High Court on Wednesday appointed a committee of three lawyers and asked them to produce the statistics of dengue and malaria cases registered at all hospitals and nursing homes in the city as well as neighboring area in last six months.

The division bench of acting chief justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and justice JB Pardiwala, while hearing the petition exposing the unhygienic condition at Civil Hospital, came down heavily on the civic authorities. The court further pointed out the inefficient work done by the contractors appointed by the corporation to maintain the city clean.

The court finally appointed a committee of three advocates. Headed by advocate-general Kamal Trivedi, the committee would have SN Shelat (senior advocate representing the corporation) and Ami Yagnik (advocate for the petitioner). The court has asked the committee to submit its report by Monday.

The court has asked the committee to seek statistics and records of the cases of dengue and malaria registered in last six months in the hospitals and nursing homes within the jurisdiction of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and within five km area from the city limits.

Veteran journalist Prakash N Shah and women's activist Ila Pathak had moved a PIL before the high court, seeking action against people responsible for the pathetic and unhygienic condition at Civil Hospital, which allegedly led to the death of a doctor. They had produced photographs of the unhygienic condition and surroundings near Civil Hospital.

The state on Wednesday filed an affidavit in the court. The state government is taking all efforts to make the hospital campus an ideal one by initiating a drive to maintain cleanliness and hygiene.
