Gujarat has received only 4% of season's rainfall, it may rain today

After lashing the city with unexpected rain on Thursday, the rain God skipped showering its blessings on Ahmedabad on Friday even as denizens remained equipped to deal with it. People carried umbrellas and raincoats with them only to be disappointed when just light showers or drizzles poured out of the sky.

Including Thursday's downpour, Ahmedabad received 038.4 cms of rain with total rainfall so far being 053.4 cms. According to the Indian Meteorological Department in Ahmedabad, the amount of rain is a departure from the normal in the month of July by around 115.4 cms.

Eight people in the state lost their lives in rain related incidents, according to the state relief control data. So far the state has received 4% of its monsoon rains.

According to State Relief Control Room data, a total of 8 deaths have been reported in the state due to rain in the last two days (July 6 and 7).

While deaths of 3 people in Kukavav taluka of Amreli district have been reported because of drowning, other five deaths were caused by lightning in five districts -- Kodinar taluka (Junagadh district), Mangrol taluka (Surat), Karzan taluka (Vadodara) Jasdan taluka (Rajkot) and Kalawad taluka (Jamnagar).

Out of 225 talukas in the state, 166 have received rain and 59 talukas are still waiting for their first showers. There are 110 talukas which have received less than 50 mm rain, 27 have got between 51 and 100 mm rain and 20 between 101 and 150 mm. Four talukas in the state have received 151-200 mm of rain. Only 3 talukas in the state have received more than 201-250 mm and two talukas have got more than 251 mm.

For Ahmedabad, the Met department has forecast one or two spells of rain or thundershowers --- heavy in some areas. In the state forecasts, the Met department says, heavy rain would occur at isolated places over Gujarat region, Saurashtra, Diu, Daman and Dadra Nagar Haveli during the next 24 hours.

While it has forecast moderate to heavy rain or thundershowers at many places in Gujarat region, Saurashtra, Diu, Daman and Dadra Nagar Haveli, it forecasts light to moderate rain or thundershowers at a few places in Kutch district.
