Ahmedabad is moving one step close to its goal of slum-free city. If all goes well, around 2,500 slum dwellers will get a new pucca house in a couple of years.

The state government’s urban development and urban housing department has approved rehabilitation of eight slums in city under ‘The Regulation for The Rehabilitation And Redevelopment of the Slums 2010’.

Two leading developers have got nod for rehabilitation and redevelopment of eight slums in city – four each in eastern and western regions of city. The state government has granted approval for rehabilitation and redevelopment of Lakhudi Talawadi in Naranpura, Mangal Talawadina Chhapra in Vasna, Kailashnagar in Sabarmati and Abhuji Kuvana Chhapra in Ambawadi. In the eastern part, slums of Bhikha Devano Vado, Rushinagar, Talawadina Chhapra in Amraiwadi and Bavajina Chhapra in Khokhra will be redeveloped.

The slum dwellers are set to get houses of 36 square meters built up area which does not include common plots. The officials said that the work of rehabilitation may start after monsoon. However, ruling party in AMC, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) plans to organise ground-breaking ceremony at one of the sites before the dates for assembly election are announced and Election Commission’s code of conduct comes into effect.

Some of the schemes were approved by the state government long back, but the developers did not submit the plans for approval as they demanded more relaxation in terms of usage of Floor Space Index (FSI), said an AMC official. He said now that state government has announced bounty for developers, plans for four schemes have been submitted for approval and four are in the pipeline.

The state government amended rules for Regulation for the Rehabilitation and Redevelopment of the Slums 2010 in May and allowed developers to transfer their surplus FSI to other projects or persons. With this, the builders will be able to increase the FSI of their projects at other locations.  Moreover, the civic body has sent three more proposals of slum rehabilitation and redevelopment to the state government for approval. In addition, 30 more proposals are at various stages of approvals.
