The chief minister Narendra Modi claimed that his government has taken lead in the entire country in the implementation of Forest Rights Act by giving away titles of forest land to 1,744 tribal farmers who have been tilling that land for generations.

Modi was addressing a huge gathering of the tribals after distributing of kits and titles of land and other equipments worth Rs27.81 crore amongst over 32,000 tribals from the five tribal talukas Of Chhotaudepur, Naswadi, Kawant, Sankheda and Pavi Jetpur of Vadodara district.

Modi said, "implementation of Forest Rights Act 2005 is in full swing in the Vadodara district and has become first district in the country in implementation of this Act."

He gave the example of Hafeshwar village of the Kawant taluk where more than 500 beneficiaries have been provided the forest land, which is the only village in the country with so many beneficiaries under the Act, Modi said.

Modi said that provisions of this Act, have been used to provide road connectivity to 30 villages of the district for which acquisition of the forest land was required.

Not only that forest land was used for erecting poles for providing electricity connections to 18 villages of this district who were without power ever since the country became independent, he added.

Modi’s claim assumes significance after former Congress MP Madhusudhan Mistry, in a memorandum submitted to Modi in the past, had alleged that the Gujarat was not taking any decision on considering the claims of the farmers who have been tilling the forest land.

In the memorandum, Mistry had alleged that Modi-led BJP government has not been providing the forest land to the tribal farmers in the tribal dominated districts of the state who are eligible under the Forest Rights Act.

Talking about achievements of his government Modi said, "The primary health centre located in GadhBoriyad village of this district has become first village in the country for getting accreditation certificate from the government of India for providing best medical facilities to the people which are available in big hospitals.

Even Rs15,000 crore "Vanbandhu' scheme for the tribals of the state is aimed at bringing changes in their life styles and living standards, Modi said He said that 'Garib Kalyan Mela' is like an Open University educating the poor to fight against poverty.

Government schemes and treasury would surely set a poor free from the clutches of poverty, a poor should have such a confidence, he added.

With this mela at Chhotaudepur, the government has distributed tool-kits worth Rs63.50 crore to more than 63,000 beneficiaries since the first mela at Dabhoi in Vadodara district on January 3.
