The governor-designate of Gujarat and a senior Congress leader, Devendra Nath Dwivedi, 74, passed away in New Delhi early on Saturday morning.

Dwivedi had been suffering from protracted liver problems and had been recuperating at the Sir Ganga Ram hospital in the national capital for over a week.

Dwivedi had been admitted to the intensive care unit of the gastroenterology department of the hospital on July 23. He was to undergo a liver transplant, but died at 4 am on Saturday.

Dwivedi had been recently appointed as the successor to Nawal Kishore Sharma, whose five-year term as Gujarat’s governor ended on July 24. Owing to his medical condition, Dwivedi could not take charge immediately.

The Maharashtra governor, SC Jamir, had been given the additional charge of Gujarat and was sworn in as Gujarat governor on Thursday.
As for Dwivedi, he had held several important positions, such as the solicitor-general of India, in his long and illustrious career. A lawyer by profession, Dwivedi was the Congress Rajya Sabha member from 1974 to 1980.

He had a brief stint with the Nationalist Congress Party from 1999 to 2001 when he joined the party on the issue of suitability of a naturalised citizen for the office of the prime minister. Dwivedi hailed from Varanasi.

Chief minister Narendra Modi, the leader of the opposition in the Assembly, Shaktisinh Gohil, and other leaders have expressed regret over Dwivedi’s demise.
