Even after the ‘Save the girl child’ campaign there is not much improvement in sex ratio in Gujarat. The prenatal diagnostic test (PNDT) is banned in the country, still abortion of female fetus has not stopped.

To improve the sex ratio in the district, the collector of Ahmedabad will now monitor figures showing registration of pregnant women, number of sonography tests carried out and babies delivered in the maternity homes. The collector has served notices to around 1,000 clinics having licences for sonography machines in Ahmedabad.

Vijay Nehra, district collector of Ahmedabad, said that the gap between deliveries of the babies and number of sonography tests carried out at a particular clinic will help us nab the offenders who carry out PNDT.

“We have asked all the licence holders to submit a form regarding sonography tests carried out in their clinics. They will have to submit detailed information in legible writing about the patient, number of children patient has and sex of the children,” said Nehra.
The form will have to be submitted by the fifth of the next month. In case they fail to do so they will have to face the consequences, said the collector.

The collectorate has also come to know about certain maternity homes where the number of deliveries of boys is surprisingly higher than that of girls. They will have to explain the reason providing complete background of the patients and removal of fetus through medical treatment.

The procedure is compulsory under PNDT Act but is not effectively implemented. The collectorate will also organise a workshop for creating awareness about PNDT ban and procedure to be followed by the licence holders.

Nehra said that he wanted to first educate people about the law and then only carry out raids and take strict action against the offenders in case any malpractice comes to notice.
