The murder of a 65-year-old man on December 31, 2011 had left the Khokhra police puzzled. However, the police on Tuesday caught the killers and discovered that a rift between two families was the motive behind the murder.

On December 31, one Moti Desai, a resident of Rabari Vaas in Khokhra, was on a morning walk with friend Valji Desai. A Maruti WagonR car approached them, and a man from inside the vehicle started to beat Moti with a baseball bat. Moti was rushed to LG Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

Khokra police inspector MD Upadhyay, under the guidance of ACP, CN Rajput, had explored two different angles for investigation. One was an incident involving in-laws of a girl from Moti’s family who had returned home owing to dowry issues. Moti’s family had gone to Nagalpur village in Mehsana district to resolve the issue with the in-laws. However, this incident turned out to be unrelated to the murder. The other angle was a dispute between the families of Moti and another Rabari family some years ago. It was found that Moti who had a scuffle with late Soma Rabari had evicted the latter from Khokhra Rabari Vaas. The police then started looking for Soma’s son, Karman.

The police located the displaced family to Haripura in Amraiwadi. However, Karman was not to be found at home the three times that the police went looking for him, and his mobile phone was also switched off. Meanwhile, police informants had reported seeing Karman with a notorious bootlegger, one Chhotalal. The police tried to locate Chhotalal, who was also absconding. Even the bootlegger’s associates were nowhere to be found.

Later, an informant told the police about Chhotalal’s associates being in Patan. The police were then tipped off about these associates travelling in a black WagonR car at Naroda. The police nabbed the four youths, seized the car and interrogated them.

The four youths admitted to having killed Moti at the behest of Karman who had ordered the killing and paid Rs50,000 to Chhotalal and one Raju Karsan for the same. They also confessed that Karman had ordered the murder to avenge his father being disgraced and evicted from their home. The four youths were identified as one Ramesh Yadav, Rahul Thakur, Anish Parikh and Navin Solanki. Yadav also confessed to having assaulted Moti with the bat.

The four were booked for the murder of Moti Desai, while the police are still on the lookout for Karman, Chhotalal and Raju.
