While the state government is making preparations to celebrate Gujarat's golden jubilee, the library of the Gujarat state assembly is also moving towards its new avatar.

The library will be digitised in the current financial year. On the occasion of World Book and Copyright Day, Ashok Bhatt, speaker of the assembly, shared some details of the library."We are planning to digitise the library in the golden jubilee year of Gujarat. The library is unique, as unlike other state assemblies' libraries, we allow researchers and journalists to use the place for research purposes.

"It is a reference library for members of the legislative assembly, officers etc. It is quite different from other general libraries in the state. It has more documentary books, which include all the discussions since the inception of the Gujarat Assembly.

"Apart from this, the library houses books on parliamentary affairs, political science and rules of other state assemblies. A lady researcher from Sardar Patel University has done her PhD on women members of Gujarat assembly with help of books and documents available in the library."

NB Pandya, library officer of the library said, "Gujarat Legislative Assembly got 4000 books for its library as inheritance, when Gujarat became a separate state in 1960. Those books included government and private publications in Hindi, English and Gujarati languages. Now the number has grown to 73,000 books.

Most of them are reference material, which include debates and discussions carried out in the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, House of Commons in UK, Constitutional Committee, proceedings of Gujarat assembly and proceedings of Maharashtra assembly."

He further said, "Apart from this, one can find 100 dailies and 200 periodicals related to current affairs, parliamentary laws, sociology, science, literature etc. in the library. Our uniqueness is this that we just don't provide information and reference book when asked, we provide the information flagged in the book on specific pages.”
