In a strange occurrence, the groundwater level has risen in Olpad town in Surat district. Water started to spurt from borewells and overflowed from wells in the town. Interestingly, the incident was not limited to one area, but everywhere in the town.

District administration along with experts have reached the town and started investigations. Officials of Olpad taluka, including mamlatdar and TDO, rushed to the spot on Saturday morning. They were accompanied by officials from ONGC and other concerned industries.

Officials took samples of groundwater coming out from borewells and found them sour. Preliminary investigations pointed to gas leakage from underground pipelines laid by ONGC. Water samples were sent to the laboratory for complete testing.

ONGC sources said that probably gas got diverted from a specific valve, leading to the incident. As a precaution, the company has stopped supply of gas from its pipelines.

Groundwater level started to increase late on Friday night. Residents were frightened when they heard mysterious blasts inside the ground. Early in the morning, they were shocked to see groundwater spurting from borewells at high speed.

The situation started in the old part of the town. Soon groundwater level at Taiwad, Mali Falia, Juna Kumbharwad, Kabrastan and other areas, rose. Water overflowed from wells located in the town. Groundwater rose to 40 feet at Dana Kuva-a well at Taiwad, resulting in overflow.

"While water was coming out, there were minor blasts inside the ground. We informed government officials and other concerned departments," said Mohammad Hakim, a resident of Taiwad.

The district administration asked all residents to stop consuming groundwater, until the situation is resolved. It has arranged for water supply for citizens. Sources added that ONGC engineers are working to pump out gas inside the ground to bring down the groundwater level.
