The city is all set for a makeover. While the Sabarmati riverfront project has already begun the process, greener bridges in the city will add to its aesthetics. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) proposes to place potted plants on dividers on bridges and flyovers in the city.
The civic body has identified 15 out of the total 32 bridges of the city for beautification. These bridges have enough space for the potted plants. The 15 bridges include flyovers, river bridges, railway bridges etc excluding the under-bridges. "The space taken up by dividers has not been put to any other use. So we plan to use it for increasing the greenery of the city and improving the aesthetics. Based on the width of the dividers of the bridges, we have selected 15 bridges where plantations can be done. We thought of having plants in conical structures like pots (planters) along the dividers. This will be visually appealing to citizens and will give a different look to the city," stated municipal commissioner of AMC, Guruprasad Mohapatra. AMC will place 2,200 planters at a cost of Rs22 lakh by March. Giving details, deputy municipal commissioner for parks and garden department, SK Langa said, "The bridges will have planters at frequent distances. The 2.5-feet planters made of RCC material planters will have flowering plants of Bougainvillea." This plant requires less maintenance, affects the atmospheric change and flowers thrice in a year, making it ideal for the city, added Langa.
Further sharing details of the plans Mohapatra said that not only would the heavy planters be placed on the dividers, but they would also be used for advertisements. "We will execute the plan with support of the promoters. One side of the planter will have the name and logo of the advertising company and the other side will carry the AMC logo.
