Goods worth nearly Rs30 crore produced by Tihar inmates sold

Government has sold goods worth nearly Rs30 crore produced by inmates of Tihar jail over the past four years.

"The total cost of goods produced and sold in the factory of Tihar jail and funds generated therein between the year 2008 to current year is Rs29,09,08,101," Minister of State for Home Jitendra Singh informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply today.

Inmates of Tihar prisons are engaged in productive work as part of the reformation and rehabilitation programme run in different jails.

Singh also said 'Prison' is a state subject as per entry 4 of List II of the Seventh Schedule to the Constituion of India and therefore the administration and management of prisons is primarlily the responsibility of the state governments.

In Tihar jail the convicts are allocated work in the jail factory and other places. Between the year 2008 and the currrent year goods worth Rs25,14,85,199 were purchased in Tihar Prisons, he added.

Maximum sales were reported last year as goods worth Rs eight crore were purchased and items worth Rs twelve crore were sold, he said.

Singh said efforts for marketing of goods are made by the respective governments of states where products are manufactured by the inmates.
