Silence, they say is golden. Looking at gold prices shooting up, it’s valuable nowadays to remain silent — something that Naranpura police, bitten by the reflected ‘Midas touch’ these days, will agree with wholeheartedly.

However, a word of advice: When in Naranpura, please refrain from using the word GOLD; chances are you might be answering cops why you had mentioned about the yellow metal in their presence!

Though they are putting up their best of efforts, Naranpura police are yet to locate the missing 1 kg gold bar, which went into hiding since October 3. Adding to their woes, all the 9 accused, including the garage owner and 8 of his employees, have maintained ‘golden silence’ about who actually is involved in hiding the bar of fortune.

Thus, frustrated at not being able to extract information from the accused during 4 days of custody, which ended on Tuesday, Naranpura police have acquired their further custody till October 11, hoping to unravel the mystery this time.

However, that’s only a part of their worries. The bigger pain is in the custody — of the gold, not the accused! The recovered gold bars, 24 of them, are worth Rs7.70 crore, and it’s in Naranpura cops’ custody since October 5, and will do so till the missing bar is found, said ND Solanki, sr police inspector of Naranpura.

Two armed constables are posted at the seized article room of the police station round the clock to keep vigil of the gold kept in a metal safe, he said.

On October 3, a parcel containing 25 kg of gold bars worth Rs8 crore, accidentally fell on the road while being transported by a security van. Two days later a garage owner approached cops with 23 kg gold, 2 bars missing. Later, cops recovered 1 more gold bar from one of his worker. However, till date, 1kg gold bar still eludes the Naranpura cops.
