Godrej Properties Ltd, which is coming up with an initial public offering (IPO), plans to build the country’s largest township in Ahmedabad. It aims to build up

to 20,000 flats in the proposed township, which is likely to be launched in January 2010. The township will be called ‘Godrej Garden City’.

The total construction area of the project is over 40 million sq feet. It will take 10 years to build the whole township but, in the next three years, construction work on one million sq feet will be complete. The entire project is expected to cost over Rs5,000 crore, said Adi Godrej, chairman of the Godrej Group. Godrej was in the city on Saturday to promote the IPO.

“It will be unique,” he said.

“It will probably be the only township in the country to be built within the limits of a municipal corporation. Also, it will be the largest in size in India.”

The Godrej group chairman said that as the land on which the township is to be built is located within Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation limits, it will have access to the best transport and other facilities.

“Moreover, the project is based on the ‘green building’ concept,” he said. “Once work on it starts, it will be the second such project in India.”   Contd, p14
