GNLU to offer Gujarat police refresher course

The Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) will empower police personnel in the state by polishing their knowledge of law. By joining hands with the Gujarat Police Academy, GNLU will teach latest rulings in criminal cases to the police personnel.

"Following a communication from the union home minister to train an entire cadre of police personnel, we will be training around 900 members of Gujarat police including police officers, station house officer (SHO), inspectors and deputy superintendent of police (DySP)," said director of GNLU Bimal Patel.

The officers will be trained about important criminal laws enacted since 2000, important rules of the supreme court and the high court related to arrest, bail, search and seizure and so on, procedure regarding protection of privacy of victim of rape and other offenses, act and latest ruling on acquisition of land, environmental laws, procedure to be followed when arresting a person outside the state, procedure to be followed in the event of arrest of MLAs and MPs and so on.

The national law university will also separately train the IGPs of the state. Patel said that a separate course will be structured for the IGPs. The courses will begin in a few weeks.

The university will also inaugurate a centre for sports law on March 20 and train sports personalities and reporters among others.
The university will also start a post graduate diploma course on criminology and forensic science management jointly with the forensic science department in the state.

On March 28, GNLU will organise its convocation for its first batch of students that graduated in 2009.

While the event will have chief minister Narendra Modi as its chief guest, the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman award winner justice Ahmed Ebrahim of Zimbabwe will also be present as guest of honour. The event will also see the presence of chief justice of India KG Balakrishnan.
