Finding no backers among central leaders for its Gorkhaland demand, the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) has tried to turn on the heat before tripartite talks with the West Bengal and Union government in New Delhi on December 21.

In a statement, the GJM leadership has given a directive to different state and central government employees in Darjeeling to either go on mass resignation or leave the Hills immediately.

GJM president Bimal Gurung even threatened to involve school children in fast-unto-death agitations if there was no positive outcome on Gorkhaland during the December 21 tripartite meeting.

On Thursday, GJM’s fasting entered the seventh day. So far, 32 people have fallen ill because of fasting.

According to GJM spokesman Keshavraj Pokharel, who is also general secretary of the Morcha’s student’s wing (Vidyarthi Janamukti Morcha), their activists are individually approaching state and central government employees posted in Darjeeling and asking them to go for mass resignations.

“We will fix a deadline for submitting resignations and those who fail to meet the same will have to leave the Hills. We want to adopt the Telangana model of movement here as well,” he said.

Barring banks and post offices, GJM supporters have forcibly downed shutters of all state and central government offices in the hills. And except for the Darjeeling district magistrate and police superintendent, the Manch has imposed restrictions on movement of all government and police vehicles.

Chief secretary Ashoke Mohan Chakrabarty said the GJM should create an amicable situation before the tripartite meeting. “Whatever they are doing right now does not send right signals,” he said.
