A family in Chanakyapuri area of Ghatlodia witnessed a rare phenomenon when Dimple Patel (23) regained her memory and recorded her statement with the police on how she was allegedly assaulted and almost killed by the in-laws of her brother.

She remained in coma for three months since February 2010 and even after gaining consciousness in May 2010, she lost her memory till February 6 this year.

What happened to Dimple on the fateful day of February 4, 2010 was a mystery for her family, who thought she had met with an accident before going into coma. It was only when she got back her memory that she started remembering everything and named the people who had not only allegedly assaulted her but also tried to kill her to avenge her brother's broken marriage.

After that fateful day, Dimple remained in coma for three months and even after regaining consciousness, she was not able to recall anything that had happened to her.

Her father Purshottam Patel rejoiced when he realised that her daughter had started recognising every member of the family after one year of the accident.

However, when Dimple narrated what happened to her, the entire family was horrified. "Four people allegedly attempted to kill her when she was returning from college on her two-wheeler that day," inspector of Sola police station, KD Bhatt told DNA.

However, Dimple is currently unable to hear properly due
to injuries.

The police recorded Dimple's statement after she gained her memory on February 6, 2011. "A non-congnizable complaint was filed by the family after her accident a year ago, as no one knew what had happened to her," Bhatt said. Dimple has named four people, Uday Patel, Badal Patel, Vasanat Patel and Chetan Patel, all relatives of her sister-in-law Jennifer Patel, in her complaint.

Time line

  • February 4, 2010: An attempt to kill Dimple is made by the in-laws of her brother, when she was returning from her MBA classes. Dimple then goes into coma.
  • May, 2010: Dimple regains her conscious briefly but fails to remember anyone.
  • Feb 6, 2011: Dimple regains memory and recalls how she was assaulted and tried to be killed by four people, who were following her in a white Scorpio car.

Shocking facts

The family was shocked to know that Dimple's present condition was not because of a road accident, as they believed it was, but due to an attempt to kill by her brother's in-laws to avenge his failed marriage.

The motive

Dimple, a resident of Kalol, used to live at her sister's house in Chanakyapuri of Ghatlodia and was studying in third year MBA in Sikkim Manipal University in Naranpura. Her brother Dharmendra was married to Jennifer Patel in 2006.

However things got sour by 2008. Jennifer's family members demanded Rs1.25 lakh from Dimple's father but when they refused to give the money, Dimple was assaulted to teach the family a lesson.
