Ahmedabad: In a sign that the corporate world has put the recession behind, companies have started returning to IIM campuses with aggressive recruitment plans.

According to data released by the placement cell of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A) on Thursday, the fourth day of their summer placement, big companies that stayed away from the campus last year are back this year.

Day zero -- the first day -- of placement saw a substantial number of international offers, which were missing last year. Those who accepted domestic offers also had an element of international posting as part of their package. "Essentially, most students placed on Day 0 have the scope of an international experience," said IIM media cell coordinator Rohan Desai.

The overall scene is certainly much better than last year, say students. "Hindustan Unilever and Procter & Gamble, which top the student preference list in marketing, were back on campus to recruit summer interns for 2010. Diageo, Nokia and Coca-cola were the other sought-after marketing companies on Day 0.5," Nissim Nabar, member of Media Cell, said. Several other companies from the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) segment are also back.

Bankers, too, are more aggression this time. Head of human resources at Stan Chart Madhavi Lall expressed enthusiasm at the hiring trends this year. "We never had a freeze on hiring but are certainly recruiting in larger numbers from B-school campuses," she said.

The second day, what they term as Day 0.5 of the summer placement process, saw companies from marketing, general management, consulting and finance offer internships.

Tata Administrative Service and The Aditya Birla Group both offered general management roles. Put together, the companies saw over 15 acceptances from the campus.
