Nearly 6,000 families in the city are suffering sleepless nights, on account of a decision taken by the city civic body.

After the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) decided to seal party plots not complying with GDCR (General Development Control Regulations) norms, families of couples who had planned to get married at these venues, are a worried lot.

Several families have adjusted by changing the date of the wedding, while others have cut short their list of invitees in order to accommodate them in alternative (and smaller) venues. But while those are a lucky few, several would-be brides and grooms have not been able to find an alternative at all - even when, in some cases, just weeks or days remain for the wedding.

Ambawadi resident Kalpesh Bhagat was fortunate to get an alternative wedding venue, after spending three tense months scouting for one. However, this has not been without compromise. “The party plot I had earlier booked was at walking distance from my house. The new venue is a good 25-minute drive away,” frowned Bhagat. He said that had he not managed to secure this venue, he would have had to shorten the list of invitees.

Lucky souls like Bhagat at least have somewhere to get married at. Several others though, are wondering whether they’ll have to do the saat pheras at home after all!

Ajay Shridhar had booked a party plot in Vejalpur for his daughter’s wedding, six months back. Now, the party plot has been sealed as it falls under the green belt. Shridhar says he has lost all hopes of getting a satisfactory venue for his daughter’s big day. “The wedding is just fifteen days away, and our family as well as the groom’s are very worried,” he says.

Shridhar says he is pleading with all his ‘connections’ in order to get one of the premium clubs located on SG Highway, as the venue. He is especially concerned about parking space, as he plans to have around 2,000-2,500 guests at the wedding. “But one thing is for sure - where location goes, compromise is inevitable,” he says.

Party plot owners have started returning the initial deposits paid by their clients. They feel that the AMC is working against public interest. “The GDCR norms are such that a majority of the city plots will fail to comply with them,” said one of the party plot owners. He said that they are unwilling to surrender their land, as many of them have inherited it.
