Leak occurred after a drilling machine which was digging a pit for erecting pillars for a flyover, broke the main gas pipeline.
Gas leakage from an underground pipeline created panic among citizens of Parvat Patia in Surat on Monday morning. The leakage occurred after drill machine, which was digging a pit for erecting pillars for a flyover, broke the main gas pipeline. The leakage was fixed in few hours by officials. No casualties have been reported in the incident.
Work on the BRTS flyover was underway near the Octroi post at Parvat Patia on Monday morning. Drill machine, which was engaged for digging a pit suddenly hit with a 12 inch gas pipeline of Gujarat Gas Company Pvt Ltd (GGCL), laid 8 ft under the ground. The blow was so hard that it created a crack on pipelines, resulting into gas leakage. Workers working in the area fled from the spot after realizing about the leakage. The gas leak was in a huge quantity and people surrounding 2 km area, complained of nausea and vomiting.
Heavy chaos prevailed in the area and local people gathered before the site. Contractor of the project, Vijay Mistry and Associates informed the police and GGCL officials about the incident. The police rushed to the spot and diverted the traffic and evacuated people from nearby houses. GCCL officials reached the spot hours after the incident. The leakage happened at 9:15 am, while officials reached at the spot at 12:40 pm.
The leakage could not be fixed quickly as officials were not able to locate the valve of pipeline to shut supply of gas to the pipeline. After two hours of labour, GGCL officials were able to locate two valves of the pipelines.
"Before starting the digging work we asked GGCL officials whether any pipelines passes through the spot or not. They said that company has no gas pipeline passing through the construction site," an official of Vijay Mistry and Associates, said.
