After the spurt in H1N1 positive cases following the Ganesh festival, the garba hotspots in the city have ensured strict safety measures in accordance with the health department’s instruction to curb the spread of swine flu and other dust-related diseases.

In Ahmedabad, thousands of youths throng different venues, dancing to the vibrant tunes of garba, usually in open grounds. However, this year, the threat of swine flu is looming large, and the dust-laden garba grounds will only act as a catalyst to further spread the virus. The health department had earlier sent a notice to all the major garba organisers in the city, requesting them to host the event on lawns rather than on dusty grounds.

Organisers have been asked to sprinkle water at intervals to settle the dust. Besides, all the district collectors have been asked to monitor any problems arising at crowded garba venues. Arrangement for separate entry and exit points has been made for the revellers.

Major garba hubs in the city, like Rajpath club, Karnavati Club, Narayani Resorts, YMCA, Gokul Party Plot, have taken care of the safety measures in public interest. “We have always taken care of our members’ security and safety, and put it before everything else. We have taken all the necessary steps enunciated by the health department and are also trying to create further awareness by putting up boards about the dangers of swine flu. We have put up boards on club premises and on the grounds so that people can read and understand better about the pandemic,” said Viraj Shah, vice president, Karnavati Club.

Even people with mild flu-like symptoms have been asked to keep away from crowded garba venues. The health department has also asked participants to keep a minimum of three-ft distance from people while in a crowd, to wash hands after touching railings or tables at food stalls and to ensure basic coughing etiquette. “I have been to some of the clubs in the city, and all of them seem to have maintained strict security measures which was quiet a relief,” said Jignesh Shah.
