The double murder in Gandhinagar, it seems, was executed with the sole motive of robbing the two victims, a woman and her daughter. Police officials have learnt that the house, which was soon going to be the venue of a wedding, was full of valuables.

Shivshankar Trivedi, whose wife and daughter were found murdered, has claimed that valuables, including dozens of sets of gold bangles, earrings and expensive wristwatches, are missing from the house.

He said that his wife and daughter were fond of collecting gold bangles and wristwatches and, over the years, they had spent lakhs on these valuables.

Trivedi alleged that the murders were the handiwork of labourers from Rajasthan who were employed in his house for maintenance purposes. He said that the assailants had taken advantage of the fact that there was nobody in the house at the time.

The labourers were working in the house amidst preparations for marriage and had probably seen the jewellery and other valuables.

The bereaved father dismissed the police's view that the murder was the result of his daughter, Nupur's, love affair. Trivedi confidently said that his daughter was not involved in any relationship.

He said that all that Nupur wanted was to start living in the US for further studies and that's why he had arranged her marriage with a US-based doctor Chetan Sharma.

Nupur, 28, and her mother, Madhu, were found murdered in their bungalow last Wednesday.

On Sunday, Shivshankar Trivedi, who lives in New Orlando in the US, reached Gandhinagar and performed the last rites. Sources said that a set of bloodstained metal bangles and a cutter had been found from beneath the sofa-set in the house.

"We have taken the statement of Shivshankar Trivedi," said Piyush Patel, district superintendent of police, Gandhinagar.

"He has said that valuables are missing and there have been other revelations as well. We are investigating the case from various angles but no lead has been found yet."
