At a time when Ahmedabad is all set to witness an India-New Zealand test match at their very doorstep, the detection of crime branch (DCB) sleuths have reportedly caught eight people on charges of betting.

The eight are believed to have been betting on the twenty20 match played between Pakistan and South Africa on Sunday evening. Of them, two are said to be partners of the city's notorious gambler Kalgi, who is absconding.

According to sources, a DCB team raided Nirav Complex near Darpan six roads in Naranpura at around 5 pm on Sunday, after getting a tip-off that a gang of bookies were betting on a cricket match of the 20-overs format. The DCB officials raided the den on getting the information, and caught eight men, along with equipment used for booking.

"We have caught Raju Murli and Dinesh Lottery, along with six of their men. Murli and Lottery were partners with a 30% share each, while Dinesh Kalgi had a 40% share in the bet. We have strong evidence to prove that Kalgi is their partner," said a police source.

With Kalgi's name surfacing among cricket bookies, a raid took place around two months back in Sola area. Kalgi was arrested in the case, but later released. Sources said that with this new development, the police are sure to apprehend him once again.

Sources said that the police have seized equipment worth Rs2 lakh including computers, laptops, two television sets, two CCTV screens and cameras, 15 cell phones and vehicles, along with Rs35,000 in cash. The police are investigating the case for further details. However, they refused to divulge any more information in the matter.
