Eleven-year-old Kishor Rathod had no clue about the cruel fate that awaited him at the Kishkindha water park.

The young boy, hailing from Gangavathi, went to visit the amusement park as a part of a summer camp programme. “A two-month summer camp was organised by the Napoleon school, of which Kishor was a part. He was enjoying the water rides on May 19, when he fell from one of them and was grievously injured. He ended up with fatal head injuries,” said Kishor’s father Ramesh Rathod.
The boy is currently fighting for his life and is admitted to NIMHANS, Bangalore.

Following his injury, the boy was taken first to the Gangavathi hospital and then to the Hubli hospital. The latter referred him to the NIMHANS .

However misery struck the family as Kishor’s Below Poverty Level (BPL) Card was rejected by the hospital as his name was wrongly written as Ashok. On pleading it was a mistake, they told the family to get an acknowledgment from the concerned tahsildar.

“When we brought the mistake to the notice of the concerned revenue officer, they had said that it will be corrected after one year when new cards will be given. But now we shall have to obtain a letter from tahsildar in Gangavathi to make use of BPL card,” said Ramesh.

The boy had gone to the summer camp with his elder brother Kiran.
Both the parents are daily wage labourers and the annual income of the family doesn’t will hardly be Rs10,000. “For the camp, we had to pay Rs1,250 for each of my sons. It was not easy for us but we arranged for the money somehow. But I had never thought that for this, I will have to see one of my sons struggling for life in the ICU,” said Kavitha, the mother.

Blaming the organisers, the parents said, “When there is only four teachers taking care of 100 kids, disasters like this is bound to happen.”

Dr Chandramouly, neurosurgeon, who is treating the boy currently said that Kishor is suffering from biogenic meningitis, inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord.
“There is excess of fluid concentration in his brain which we are trying to take out. No improvements have been seen so far and the clinical condition is worsening day by day,” said Dr Chandramouli.

Jalaludin, the convener of Napolean school which conducts summer camp every year, said, “Kishor was pushed by an unknown person from behind and he fell. I took him to the nearby government hospital immediately. I have  given them Rs4,000 when he was taken to Hubli hospital. There were no stand-by measures that we could have relied on in the water park.” He added, “We kept telling Kishor to play in the children’s section but the boy repeatedly strayed to the adult’s section.”
