Police heaved a sigh of relief as Friday prayers at local mosques went off peacefully today and no untoward incident was reported from any part of the city.

Curfew has been imposed in 17 police station limits of the Old City area and eight more police station limits of areas adjacent to it.

In view of the sensitiveness of Friday prayers, the state government had decided not to relax the curfew today though the situation was calm during and after the relaxation of curfew for two hours yesterday.

However, police allowed people to offer prayers at local mosques in some places.

All roads leading to the historic Mecca Masjid were sealed off completely.

"We received another ten companies of additional central forces from the Centre besides 20 which are already on the field," a senior police official said, adding curfew may be relaxed tomorrow for some time if the situation continues to be peaceful.

Meanwhile, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation personnel removed all flags and banners of religious nature from city walls and poles.

Two persons were killed and over 90 sustained injuries so far in the clashes that began Saturday last over an issue of religious flags.

The city police initially imposed curfew in 17 police station limits of the Old City area. As violence spread to other areas, the curfew was extended to eight more police station limits.
