Fresh general elections needed: Mamata Banerjee

Supporting the demands of anti-corruption activists, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said fresh general elections were needed in the country since the government was in "minority".

"I saw on TV that people from Team Anna said the government had lost its credibility to remain in power and there is a need to go to polls. I fully agree with them," Banerjee told a press conference here.

"This is a minority government and it is threatening others through CBI and vigilance and enforcement departments," the Trinamool Congress chief said.

On Monday, former army chief General (retd) V.K. Singh, who had joined the stir led by social activist Anna Hazare, said parliament must be dissolved and fresh elections held.

On Sunday's reshuffle in the union council of ministers, Banerjee said it was the Congress’s government, not UPA's. "This is a one-party rule.”

She said Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and AIADMK had refused to join the government despite the Congress’s appeals.

“No party joined the ministry. Is it not no confidence against the government? Enough is enough,” she said.

Trinamool Congress had withdrawn its support to the UPA government over economic reforms in September.
