A fresh avalanche hit Kashmir Valley on Tuesday, killing an army jawan in Kupwara district. The incident comes a day after 17 armymen met a similar fate during a training exercise at Khilanmarg.
Tuesday’s avalanche hit Tangdhar, 145 km from Srinagar, around 2.45 am, trapping 14 armymen, a defence spokesman said. All of them were pulled out of the deep snow, but one died later.
Frequent rain and heavy snowfall trigger avalanches and landslides in Kashmir every year. The Snow Avalanche Studies Establishment had given a general warning on February 7, cautioning people against venturing out.
There was heavy snowfall in Tangdhar for the past few days, which increased the threat of avalanches in high altitude areas across the state.
