Frauds take cyber path to crime in Gujarat

Out of the total number of cyber crimes registered in the state, most were found to be related to frauds and illegal gains.

If you thought cyber crime is only about misuse of personal accounts in social networking sites or posting obscene materials on the virtual world, then think again. Out of the total number of cyber crimes registered in the state, most were found to be related to frauds and illegal gains. Other cases relates to revenge or of personal score settlement, or of pranks and greed too.

Cyber crime has now increased its reach — from mere posting of obscene material and hacking of email accounts it now involves illegal transfer of funds. A total of 67 cases of cyber crimes have been registered in the state in 2011 but only 36 people have been arrested for these crimes so far.

Of these cases, 16 were of frauds and illegal gains, while one was of personal vendetta. Twelve cases related to eve teasing and harassment, while only one case of prank was registered in the state. However, other instances like sending fake emails or threatening emails too have been registered in the state.

While Maharashtra with 226 cases top the list, Gujarat ranks seventh with 36 cases. Kerala (135), Rajasthan (110), Madhya Pradesh (97), Tamil Nadu (43), Punjab (38) are some other states, leads instances of cyber crimes committed there. 

Talking to DNA, police inspector of cyber crime cell in detection of crime branch (DCB) said that the cell has been encountering economic offences through cyber world on a regular basis. “Cases of hacking bank accounts, phishing, lottery related scams come under this head,” he said.

The cyber crime cell has also been handling economic offences on cyber world, based on an application and not FIR. “If these applications are added than the number of economic offences through cyber world will be more than double,” a source said.

According to NCRB figures, 17 people in the age group of 18 to 30 years and 13 in the age group of 30 to 45 years have been arrested by the Gujarat police in this connection. One person over 60 years of age too had been arrested on charges of cyber crime in 2011 by the Gujarat police.
