Attack leaves one person seriously injured; he is now in coma.
On Monday night, a mob of around 25 notorious youths wrecked havoc at the premises of the New Civil Hospital in Surat. In a scene straight out of a film, the mob chased down four youths inside the casualty ward of the hospital and attacked them with sticks and knives.
The attack left one person seriously injured sending him into a coma while others also received injuries. Other patients and hospital staff could only stand and witness the gruesome attack, which led to a panic situation at the hospital. Police learnt that the attack was the result of a minor scuffle between some locals of Kosad Aawas near Amroli village.
Earlier on Monday evening, some youths had an argument over a cricket match near their locality in Amroli, which resulted in an altercation between two groups. The scuffle left some boys severely injured, who were then admitted to the New Civil Hospital on Surat’s ring road.
The injured youngsters included one Hanif Patel, Ibrahim Shaikh and his brother Rahim Shaikh along with another friend.
However, not satisfied with rendering injuries to the boys and with vengeance on their mind, the mob of over 25 hooligans followed them to the hospital.
After spotting Hanif and his friends near the casualty ward, the mob attacked them with knives and sticks. Stunned by the sudden attack, Rahim and Hanif tried to escape, but were caught and stabbed near the waiting lounge of the hospital.
The two boys were hit several times on their heads even after being stabbed. With blood spread on the hospital floor, the panicking onlookers could do no more than watch in utter disbelief.
No one amongst the patients or hospital staff dared intervene fearing for their own lives, even as the mob made good its escape after the assault. After learning of the incident, Khatodara police studied the hospital's CCTV footage on Tuesday, which had recorded the entire attack.
According to police officials, a majority of the mob has been identified, and teams have been sent to nab the attackers. After the attack, Khatodara police registered an FIR against 20 people, including Mahetab, Sukhdev, Yunus, Javed Nepali, Chikan and Abu Khabri along with two others.
However, the audacious mob also lodged a cross-complaint against Hanif and his friends. A total of eight people were injured in the attack at the hospital, including Rahim, who went into a coma after a blow to the head from a stick.
