Four persons were today arrested for smuggling liquor worth over Rs1 crore from a distillery in connivance with excise officials in Sitapur district, a senior police official said.

"Sidhauli police intercepted a tanker bearing the label of kerosene oil, but 12,000 litres of liquor was recovered from the container during the search," Special Director General (Law and Order) Brij Lal told reporters.

Driver Virendra Kumar Yadav, Anant Maurya, Vikram Prasad Kushwaha and assistant manager of the distillery Dheeraj Kumar, who were travelling in the tanker, have been arrested, Lal said.

"During interrogations, it was revealed that the arrested persons in connivance with the excise officials were smuggling liquor from Biswan to Gorakhpur," the SDG said.

Assistant excise commissioners Bacha Lal and Oliver Singh were previously posted as excise inspector at the distillery.

"These two officers took money from the smugglers," Lal added.
