Chennai: On Tuesday, the Madras high court served contempt notices on four police officers who had ordered a lathicharge on lawyers in the court premises on February 19.

A bench had earlier held the four responsible for ordering the lathicharge that injured lawyers and damaged property, and even recommended disciplinary action, but the government didn't do anything. The officers -- K Radhakrishnan, additional director-general (law and order), AK Viswanathan, IG police headquarters, M Ramasubramani, DIG (armed police) and Prem Anand Sinha, the Kancheepuram superintendent, -- have been asked to be in court on December 18.

In August, the HC recommended the suspension of Viswanathan and Ramasubramani. But they went to the Supreme Court (SC) and sought a stay on their suspensions. The SC asked them to approach the high court.
