Now, those applying for driving licences in the city will be spared from standing in long queues at Regional Transport Office (RTO) near Subhash Bridge. From this Thursday, people can apply for licences online. After that, they will be provided date and time to submit relevant documents at the RTO.

The RTO will launch the website www.sarthi.nic.in on August 25. Those who want to apply for a driving licence online will have to log on to this website and fill up an online form. As soon as the correctly filled form is submitted online, the server of the RTO will generate a date and time.

The applicant will have to approach the RTO office with a hard copy of the submitted form, relevant documents and fees only on the date and time allotted to him/her. This service will be available for both learner’s licence and regular driving licence.

In the online form, an applicant will be required to furnish details like name, sex, age, and address. The RTO office has already opened 18 windows to handle such applications with other work, thus reducing to great extent the scope of long-hour waits for applicants. The exercise of filling the form will be simple, claimed RTO officials. RTO officer JM Bhatt said the move of going online is aimed expediting the process of applying for and awarding licences.

However, the existing system of applying directly at the RTO office for licences will also remain available.

"Given the busy schedules that people have these days, it was imperative to fast-track the process. Now they will not have to stand in long queues for long hours for submitting their applications. They will be required to be present at the date time allotted to them and the process will be completed within a few minutes," he said.  Bhatt said other RTO services will also be made available online soon.
