Ahmedabad: Are you one of the lakhs of citizens who has to commute You can now take wings to escape the traffic snarl that is a permanent feature from Geeta Mandir to Jamalpur, particularly during the peak traffic hours. But you will have to wait till June 2010. For around 45% of the work on the 750-metre long flyover, known as the Jamalpur flyover, has been completed.
"The work on the Jamalpur bridge is on schedule and we expect it to be finished by June or July 2010," said municipal commissioner IP Gautam.
Commuters, meanwhile, heaved a sigh of relief when it was told that the work on the flyover will be complete within a few months.
A professional, Aaafaq Ansari who commutes from Shah Alam to Vastrapur via the Jamalpur junction everyday said that the shielded portion of the flyover under construction leads to further traffic snarls.
"If that wasn't enough there is the flower market and vegetable vendors who add to the chaos and the traffic jam," said Ansari.
"Once the flyover is ready, the traffic which currently passes through the road will shift to the flyover. This will also reduce the time taken to commute. Though we understand that the present inconvenience is due to the ongoing work and is temporary it would be great if the work gets completed soon," said Aafaq. The AMC is spending Rs44 crore on the project.
AMC officials said that once the flyover was constructed it would take just three to four minutes to reach Jamalpur from Geeta Mandir. At present it takes around 20 minutes during peak hours.
AMC officials had targeted finishing the fly-over within 21 months. The work on the flyover commenced last year in September.
While studying the feasibility of the project, the civic body realised that to begin the work on the flyover, they needed to remove underground storm water line and Raska pipelines. It was found that the construction of flyover and the weight of vehicles may harm the pipeline connections. So, the civic body will spend Rs125 crore to change the affected storm water pipeline and Raska pipeline connections.
