To ensure better safety of the Ukai dam, the district administration in Surat has decided to connect all 22 floodgates of the dam to a computerised system.

With the system, the gates will be automatically opened by a computer, when needed. Apart from this, the system will also monitor water coming into the dam. Each year, during the monsoon, 24/7 special surveillance is kept at Ukai dam by the Surat district administration.

This is because minor error in monitoring inflow and outflow can result in floods in the city. To avoid such a situation, the district collectorate has decided to transfer all manually operated floodgates of the dam to a computer system.

The dam has 22 floodgates, which are at present monitored by a technical staff of the dam. The computer system installed will monitor the inflow and velocity of water in the dam and based on that it will open the gates.

"According to information collected, the system will decide on the number of gates to be opened. It will alert the control room, which will pass the message to higher authorities," said an official of the Ukai dam. The official said that once the required amount of water is discharged from the dam, the system will automatically close the gates.

"The most important thing in the entire process is that none of the decision will be taken by an official," said the official. He said that at present, the dam staff has to monitor the water flow and storing capacity. Based on the figures collected, it is decided how much water is to be discharged and how many gates are to be opened.

All 22 gates of the dam are manually operated, wherein a chain is attached with each gate.

The chain is connected to a motor. Whenever, a gate has to opened, the staff have to switch on the motor, which pulls the chain and opens the floodgate.
