Five persons were injured in a clash between a mob and police who used lathis and fired in the air to disperse the crowd protesting against the arrest of two political leaders at Hailakandi in Karimganj district (Assam) today.

Police said independent MLA Siddique Ahmed and former minister Sahidul Alam Choudhury were arrested for violating prohibitory orders under section 144 CRPC while they were on their way along with their supporters to attend a rally at Hailakandi.

The district administration had imposed the prohibitory orders since yesterday and had not granted permission to hold the rally apprehending breach of peace.

The rally was to be held to protest against alleged corruption of Assam Social Welfare Minister, Gautom Roy who hails from Hailakandi.
