Taking the issue of women and child trafficking seriously, the state government has sanctioned the setting up of five anti-human trafficking units. These units will be set up in woman police stations in five districts. The move is a part of the police modernisation fund (MPF), issued by the central government.

The units are being set up in the women's police stations in Ahmedabad at Karanj, Ahmedabad rural police (DSP office), Baroda, Surat and Rajkot. For this purpose each unit has been granted Rs7.58 lakh that will be spent on purchasing equipments including vehicles that will be used by the cops.

Speaking about the move, joint police commissioner (administration) Mira Ramnivas told DNA that the units will focus on all the movements in which woman and children suffer because of traffickers. She said that the units will start collecting data of such offences registered across the state and then act accordingly to prevent crime.

"As of now we can't say much about the situation as far as human trafficking is concerned, but one is clear: it's the women and children who suffer the most. We are going to start training our women police in forms of awareness, education and other essential training," Ramvivas said.

For the first time the state government has taken a serious initiative against human trafficking. However, there has some indication that the number of woman trafficking incidents has seen a sharp rise in the state. Probably, with the initiation of the anti-human trafficking units, the actual status of trafficking cases in Gujarat may emerge in coming days.
