Fire at Andhra Pradesh hospital, one dead

A 38-year-old patient died due to asphyxiation when fire broke out in an Intensive Care Unit at a government hospital in Kakinada, official sources said today.

The incident occurred last evening in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh due to a short circuit, creating panic and commotion among patients and hospital staff, they said.

The ICU was evacuated and the patients were shifted to the general ward as thick smoke filled it killing one Veeravenkata Sathayanrayana, who died of suffocation and lack of oxygen, while condition of another patient is critical, hospital sources said.

The flames were later put off after fire brigade reached the spot, they said.

Recently, the children ward in the same hospital had caught due to a short circuit.
