The Supreme Court has taken the initiative to deal with the problem of pending cases that has begun affecting the reputation of the judiciary.

Former law minister M Veerappa Moily released an ambitious ‘vision paper’ early this month and assured that 40% of pending cases would be decided within the next six months. This figure comes to around 10 million cases.

Though Rs5,510 crore has been allocated by the government for legal reforms that include infrastructure and computerization of courts across the country, it has hardly made any impact on the backlog of cases.

The apex court has asked courts to be liberal, but judiciously, in imposing cost on habitual litigants who file unscrupulous pleas.

Noting that 90% of the court time and resources are consumed in attending to such uncalled for litigation, the judges said this type of litigation “holds out an incentive for the wrong- doer”.

Meanwhile the top court on Monday sought a response from the Centre on a petition seeking a ban on the use of tinted glass.
