Festive week promises four days of fun in Ahmedabad

With five festivals falling on the last four days of this week, people are looking forward to a long weekend break from humdrum of daily routine.

With five festivals falling on the last four days of this week, people are looking forward to a long weekend break from humdrum of daily routine. Most schools and colleges of the city as well as government offices will stay closed in this period for the festivals.

Different communities have planned processions, poojas, celebrations at home and other events during the festivals. The Jains took out a grand procession from Paldi on Wednesday and they will take out a similar procession on Thursday too on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti.

On Thursday, the Tamils of Ahmedabad will take out another procession from Khokhra on the occasion of Panguni Uthiram, a festival for the worship of Lord Murugan.

Good Friday and Hanuman Jayanti, both important festivals, fall on April 6 this year. They are followed by Easter on Sunday.

On Wednesday, a huge chariot (rath) of Lord Mahavir was taken out in a procession by Jains to mark the birth anniversary of the 24th and last Tirthankar of the Jains. Several music bands and thousands of devotees took part in the procession that began from Paldi. The Jains will take out another procession on Thursday, again from Paldi.

Balamurugan Devasthanam Trust has organised a procession from Khokhra on Thursday on the occasion of Panguni Uthiram. Panguni Uthiram is special to devotees of Lord Murugan. M Elavallagan of the trust said devotees taking part in the procession will carry pots filled with milk.
