The family and fans of AR Rahman have got used to him winning the best of awards. After last year’s dream run, when the composer won the Oscar, Golden Globe and Bafta, he began the New Year by winning two Grammys. It was just what Rahman’s fans had hoped for.

There were some celebrations outside Rahman’s house at Kodambakkam in Chennai on Monday on account of the Grammys, but not as big as the ones that happened after he had won the Oscars. Rahman himself doesn’t attach too much importance to prizes. He believes it is God’s grace that makes him come up with winners. Ala pugazhum Iruvanake (all praise to God), was all the composer-singer had said upon winning the Oscars.

“Rahman is beyond awards, but we feel very elated. After the Golden Globe, Oscars, Bafta, he has won the Grammy now. We have been bursting crackers and distributing sweets,” one fan said outside his residence.

“We are all very happy. We heard the news at 3.30 in the morning,” Rahman’s sister Fatima said. “Rahman called his mother and told her that he had won. She immediately informed all of us and we are very pleased for him. After the Oscars, he won the Padma Bhushan and now the Grammy. All his fans are very happy and celebrating.”
