Here is a list of Comptroller and Auditor General of India findings in Gujarat:

  • The water testing agencies had not identified keystone species or assessed pollution levels of chemical indicators like fecal coliform, total coliform, dissolved oxygen and bio-chemical oxygen and bio-oxygen demand in lakes.
  • The agencies had not collected information on the effect of human activities on quality of water in rivers and lakes.
  • Water testing agencies had also not assessed level of contaminants against norms in river, lake, ground water.
  • The government remained unaware of the ecological health of rivers, lakes and ground water, which could lead to deterioration of ecosystem beyond redemption and loss of valuable species, besides affecting human health.
  • The study of only 7 out of 831 wetlands was conducted.
  • In Vadodara untreated sewages, domestic waste water and slaughter house wastage were discharged into Gorva Lake, overflow of which resulted in further polluting Gotri Lake.
  • In Surat big industrial units of Hazira released treated water to the estuary of Tapi with high level hydro-carbon resulting in loss of fish-stock.
  • Water Quality Review Committee (WQRC) was set up in 2002 to function as the nodal agency for compilation of reports, convening meetings of the implementing / testing agencies. But it was found by CAG that WQRC had convened only six meetings between 2003 and 2011 and did not meet even once in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010.
