Youngsters in the age group of 18 to 25 turned up in large numbers at a private wedding hall in Chennai on Tuesday to express solidarity with Anna Hazare and his fight against corruption.

They were in for a surprise when nonagenarian V Kalyanam, personal secretary to Mahatma Gandhi, walked up to the podium and gave a piece of his mind about the state of affairs in the country.

“India will get a sure gold medal if corruption is entered as an item in the Olympic Games,” Kalyanam told the audience. “We may not be a force in football or athletics or hockey. But India is the undisputed global leader in corruption.”

Referring to Anna Hazare’s arrest in New Delhi, Kalyanam said it was easier to fight foreign tyranny than the tyranny of our own people. He ridiculed the contention of Union ministers like Kapil Sibal and Chidambaram that Parliament was supreme and civil society has no voice.

“These ministers and politicians forget the fact that it is we who elect them and they are our servants,” said Kalyanam.

Meanwhile, more than 30 people who were sitting in fast courted arrest in Chennai. There were no untoward incidents and the whole protest was organized in a systematic way without causing hardship to anybody.

“It is youth power guided by wisdom of older generation like Kalyanam,” said Bhavana Upadhyaya, spokesman, India Against Corruption.
