After a rigorous screening process, 391 students have been offered admission to the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad's (IIMA) two-year Post Graduate Programme (PGP) in management.

The number of engineers in the new batch has increased to 94% compared to last year's 91%.

Number of female candidates has dropped from 19% last year to 11% this year. Of the total students, 369 are engineers, 12 have a science background, nine are from the commerce stream while one is from the arts faculty. When asked as to why engineering students dominate the composition of batches every year, faculty of IIMA Diptesh Ghosh, who is the chairperson of PGP admissions committee of the institute, said the result is a pure function of CAT score.

"There has been no deliberate attempt by the institute to create a certain composition," said Ghosh. He said that the talent pool that they had for the final interview was dominated by engineering students. "The reason could be that a large number of students go for engineering after 10+2.

Moreover, in most cases such students have a better grip over subjects like mathematics, which helps them score better in CAT.  In such a situation it becomes difficult to have a batch with diverse background," he said.

He also said that there was no change in the intake method this year. While the institute has offered admission to a total of 391 students including those in the reserved categories, the total number of students in this year's batch of PGP will be 385 which includes 182 general category, 104 non creamy OBC, 58 schedule caste, 29 schedule tribe and 12 differently abled students.

Talking about the total offer for admission to 391 students against the batch capacity of 385 this year, Ghosh said, "From our past experiences, we have taken into account the possibility of a few students not turning up for admission. So we have given an excess offer as a buffer in such a situation." The last date for the selected students to confirm their acceptance of admission offer is May 17 and the classes will begin by June end.

While three other students who have been offered admission by IIMA could not be contacted, city coaching institutes have confirmed that at least six students from the city have got admission offers from IIMA.

Three students from a city coaching class including a student of DAIICT, Anup Dhanvijay, besides two Indian Oil Corporation employees, Navneet Kumar and Rachana, have also got admission offers from the premium institute.
