Despite recent attempts by city cops to keep criminal activities under check, law breakers in the eastern part of the city, it seems, are unfazed by cops' hawk eyes. While a shopkeeper was looted at gunpoint in broad-day light near CTM on Thursday, a couple in Amraiwadi was fatally wounded when they successfully resisted a robbery bid on Friday. In the third incident, an elderly woman was allegedly murdered in Naroda by thieves. What is alarming here is the fact that all these incidences have taken place within 48 hours.

Ramol police said the husband of former corporator Nairuti Chaudhary, Ashvin Chaudhary was robbed of valuables worth Rs45,000 at gunpoint on Thursday. The incident took place when notorious criminal Rohit Fauji and three accomplices barged into Ashwin's mobile shop in Rabari Colony at 12:45pm. "They knocked him down and placed a gun on his forehead demanding extortion money. They only let him off after Chaudhary gave them his gold chain and a new cellphone - both valued at Rs44,000," cops said.

However, Ramol police acted swiftly and nabbed Fauji from near CTM circle in the evening and filed a case of robbery and attempt to murder. Police added that such cases have been registered against Fuji earlier too.

Ramol police inspector RD Gohil said, "The incident is serious but we have nabbed the culprit." However, shopkeepers in Vastral area observed a day-long bandh on Friday to protest the assault on Chaudhary.

An Amraiwadi couple was hospitalized after they were assaulted and seriously injured by four men who had entered their house with the intention of committing robbery in the wee hours on Friday.

Parul Gokani, 35, a resident of Mangaldham Society in Amraiwadi, and her husband Upendra were asleep when four men entered their house. Amraiwadi police said Parul woke up when the robbers tried to snatch her gold chain and Upendra, a labour contractor, also got up in the melee and the couple raised an alarm. Following this, the robbers hit the couple with iron pipes and sticks before fleeing the spot.

The injured couple was then rushed to GL Hospital in Maninagar. In the evening, they were shifted to a private hospital in the city. On the basis of a complaint filed by Parul, Amraiwadi police have registered a case of robbery and attempted murder against unknown persons.

In yet another incident of robbery on Thursday, one Kanta Panchal, 70, a resident of Saijpur Excise Chowki, Naroda, who used to lived alone, was found murdered in her house.  Noticing the door of her house ajar, neighbours went inside to find Panchal lying in a pool of blood. She was tied and the house was ransacked.

Neighbours informed Kanta's daughter Nayna Panchal, and she informed the Sardarnagar police. Sardarnagar Police said that thieves entered Panchal's house, tied her hands and legs and later ransacked the house to steal valuables. They later assaulted and killed the elderly woman before running away.

Sardarnagar police inspector VS Sarvaiya said the murder was committed with the intention of committing robbery. He added it might be an insider's handiwork. "Neighbours told us that Kanta did not let any stranger in her home. So it is possible that somebody whom she knew might have some role to play in the murder," Sarvaiya said.

On the basis of Nayana's complaint, cops have lodged a complaint of murder against unknown persons and started further investigation.
