Drug trafficking on a high along borders

After the recent reports of sudden rise in drug trafficking from Nepal and Bhutan, the government has asked security and intelligence agencies to keep a strict check along the borders.

The seizure of narcotics valued at Rs8 crore in March alone has put the government in a tight spot and reflects that the borders are more vulnerable than before.

Former director general of Border Security Force (BSF) Prakash Singh sees the increase in trafficking of narcotics as a grave concern for country.

 “The Nepal and Bhutan borders are porous. Smugglers use these borders to traffic heroin, ganja and charas into the country,” Singh told DNA.

Singh also expressed his deep concern over increasing narcotics business in India. He said, “Narcotics business has increased in India drastically in last few years.

“It is a huge concern for the agencies. Agencies need to plug the borders to stop the entry of smugglers. Government also needs to make the law more stringent.”
