Even as the central and state governments work overtime to contain the flu pandemic, the corporate sector is doing its bit to ensure safety of employees.

Besides keeping employees updated on the disease, companies are urging them to stay away from work if they have symptoms of influenza.

Tata-AIG has issued a circular which tells employees “to inform their supervisor and leave the office premises immediately in order to take necessary medical advice if they develop flu-like symptoms”. Employees have to follow a similar process if any family member or close contact is infected. The supervisors, in turn, are required to inform the zonal/regional HR representative of any infection in their teams.

“Over the past few days…there have been reports of 10 fatal cases of H1N1… We are closely monitoring the situation. While authorities have indicated that there is no need to panic, it is important that we take appropriate precautions," a group e-mail from country head and CEO Sunil Mehta read.

The circular recommends World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines to executives: “Avoid crowded public places as far as possible; avoid direct contact with someone coughing or sneezing; maintain high standards of personal hygiene, maintain healthy diet and nutrition, take prompt medical advice if there are symptoms of flu."

Another mail tries to answer “a lot of questions/doubts/anxiety in the minds of the teams”.

“While we understand and acknowledge your concern, we request you to stay calm. It has been reiterated by the health ministry that swine flu is treatable and not a cause for worry if diagnosed and treated in time”.

Tata AIG's critical incident management team has also sent triple-layered masks to its
offices across the country.
