IT czar, NR Narayana Murthy enlightened Amdavadis on Tuesday evening with his exhilarating lecture on 'Towards a corruption-free India.' The lecture was held at the Ahmedabad Management Association as a part of the 32nd Vikram Sarabhai Memorial Lecture. Talking about the wholesale and retail corruption that is going on in the country, Murthy even gave a formula which says 'Corruption = Monopoly + Discretion - Accountability.' Further throwing light on the perils that India is facing on account of corruption, Murthy also gave tips on making a corruption-free India, a reality. Some of the insights include:

  • The double digit GDP growth that India has been dreaming of can be easily achieved if India can purge itself of corruption. If the country successfully combats corruption, an additional 0.5% to 1.5% GDP growth rate is possible.
  • It is necessary to combat corruption at all levels.
  • There is need for critical mass of leaders in every aspect of life who have high qualities like honesty and integrity.
  • It is in 300 years that India has received some recognition at the global level. With India's software business flourishing and the newfound opportunity of Fortune 5000 companies to interact with India, it is very necessary that other countries do not get entangled in the messy web of corruption while entering into business and get a negative image of the country.
  • If India misses this opportunity and the world forgets, it is unlikely that it will get an opportunity for global recognition in next 100 years. In fact, India should get ready to compete with the best of the governments.
  • Lokpal Bill is a good instrument for combating corruption, however, merely passing the Bill is not enough. Transparency and accountability at all levels is a must to remove corruption. We should support Anna Hazare in his endeavour and make our country powerful and a better place to live.
  • Laws should be simplified and particularly the laws relating to direct and indirect taxes
  • There is need to pay attention to the public government system as it has massive impact on the weaker section of the society.
  • There are 4 million people living below poverty line and we, as a nation, will fail if we do not provide a better life to them. There is a need for creating 80 million jobs over next 4 to 5 years for these people in low tech manufacturing and services.
  • A decent lifestyle needs to be created for illiterate or semi-literate. Also, there is a need to shift people from agriculture to manufacturing and services so that agriculture can fetch better income.

And, the list goes on.

Giving examples on various types of corruption in our country at all levels, he even gave various statistics on the bribery and other types of corruption.  As corruption affects our daily lives from getting a gas cylinder to even a death certificate, Murthy said, "Compliance by normal citizens to the rules and norms is necessary. We have made our country reach a sorry state of affairs in last 60 years."

Further mentioning that corruption is combating growth, Murthy  said, "To make India corruption free, every Indian needs to work harder and smarter."
