A resident doctor slapped a staff nurse while on duty at New Civil Hospital in Surat, late on Thursday evening. Shocked hospital authorities have ordered an inquiry into the matter.

Meena Rajput, 37, staff nurse at F-1 ward of New Civil Hospital was on duty on Thursday evening and at 8 pm was asked by the ward doctor to provide details of a newly-born child that was admitted to the ward. While she was giving the details to the doctor, another resident doctor, identified as Dhaval Pundalik, passed a comment. This angered Meena and she, in turn,  passed a remark back to him.

A heated argument ensued between Dhaval and Meena, which soon took an ugly turn when Dhaval slapped Meena and later also tried to strangulate her. Other staff members acted immediately and quickly separated the two. Meena fainted and fell to the ground. She was rushed to the emergency ward.

The incident caused much anger among the nursing staff of the hospital, who immediately called a strike. After being promised strict action in the issue, the nurses called off their strike, late on Thursday night. The authorities formed a four-member committee on Friday morning to probe into the matter. “We are taking statements of people including staff members, to find out what actually happened. Based on the report, course of action to be taken against Dhaval will be decided,” Mahesh Wadhel, superintendent of New Civil Hospital, said.

Dhaval is not traceable even as Meena, who is is terribly upset, lies in the hospital. “He first passed abusive remarks at me and when I responded to them, he slapped me. I want the hospital administration to take severe action against Dhaval. He has humiliated me in front of the other staff members,” said Meena Rajput. She  added that if the hospital administration doesn’t take action till Monday, she will sit on a hunger strike.

“Such a shameful act can’t be tolerated at any cost,” said Iqbal Kadiwala, president of Trained Nurses Association of India (Gujarat). Meena informed Khatodara Police of the matter on Friday morning. The cops went to the hospital and took recorded her statement. However, till late in the evening, no official police complaint has been registered in the incident.
