Healthcare services were disrupted at the Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi today when resident doctors went on an indefinite strike demanding security after a medic was thrashed by the relatives of a patient.

Nearly 1,200 resident doctors, including MBBS students, are taking part in the strike.

The strike call was given by the resident doctors association after a doctor, a nurse and a hospital guard were beaten up by the relatives of a patient named Prabhu who died at the hospital yesterday afternoon. He was admitted on Friday with jaundice and low haemoglobin level.

"The patient's relatives beat up one of our nurses, a resident doctor and a guard. They held the doctor responsible for the death of the patient," Dr Chandrabhan, president of the Resident Doctors Association, said.

"This is not happening for the first time. In the past too, this type of incidents had taken place and we were given promise of security, which has not been fulfilled. We want a permanent solution to this and the strike will continue till issues of good security arrangement and safety of the doctors and nurses are permanently taken care of," he said.

Medical superintendent Dr MK Mohanty has called a meeting with the association to find out a solution to the problem, sources said.

The medical services were disrupted today but senior doctors were trying keep the functioning normal. The situation may worsen if the strike continues tomorrow, when the outpatients department will reopen.

Earlier in June, junior doctors, including postgraduate students, interns and junior residents of the hospital had been on strike for two days to protest against alleged lack of basic facilities for them.
