Forget terror, road accidents kill more people in Jammu and Kashmir. Marked improvement in situation has led to considerable decrease in terror-related fatalities in the restive state. However, 1,120 people have been killed and 9,990 others injured in 6,668 accidents in the state in 2011, official figures reveal.

During the same year, there were 192 militancy related incidents in which 61 people were killed which include 30 civilians, 13 policemen and 18 security forces across J&K.

Official figures said militancy related incidents in 2009 were recorded at 385 in which, 71 civilians, 13 police personnel, 52 security forces were killed. In 2010, militancy related incidents plummeted to 268 in which, 47 civilians, 15 police personnel and 49 security forces men were killed.

Police data reveals a 47% dip in militancy during the first three months of 2011, as compared to the same period in 2010. Civilian killings in 2012 have decreased by 50% and there have been no killings of security forces or police personnel this year, so far, as compared to last year’s figure of three.

“The downward trend in terrorism can be attributed to the high degree of domination and effectiveness achieved by all security agencies in the state. This should not, however, lull us into complacency since the intentions of terrorists cannot be predicted as their infrastructure across the line of control continues to be intact,” said Lieutenant General AS Nandal.

With the situation fast improving, the footprints of security forces are being decreased progressively so that the people can feel the impact of the changed security scenario.

Official figures reveal around 12 battalions of BSF and CRPF have withdrawn from the state since 2009, besides removing 39 bunkers.
